Answer first
The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph is one of the most replicated Swiss watches. Most fakes copy the 42.5 mm stainless steel reference 5500V with a blue or silver dial. A replica can match the silhouette in a photo. It cannot match the calibre 5200, the Geneva Seal, or the solid gold wind rose rotor.
What the genuine watch uses
- Stainless steel case, 42.5 mm, water resistance rated to 150 m.
- In-house automatic calibre 5200 with a column wheel and vertical clutch.
- Poinçon de Genève (Geneva Seal) on the movement.
- 22k gold oscillating weight cut in the shape of a wind rose, visible through a sapphire caseback.
- Maltese cross bezel with cut notches, plus a bracelet and strap that release with a small lever at the lugs.
Five checks that separate real from fake
- Rotor. Look through the caseback. The real rotor is solid gold in a wind rose shape. Most replicas use a steel rotor with an etched pattern.
- Bezel. Count the notches. They are cut, not stamped. Replicas show shallow cuts and uneven spacing.
- Strap release. The genuine bracelet and straps detach with a lever. Replicas use standard spring bars, or a copy that binds.
- Chronograph action. A column wheel and vertical clutch give a light start with no jump of the seconds hand. Modular replica movements jump on start and reset.
- Hallmark. The Geneva Seal is engraved on the movement. Replicas print text on a bridge or leave it blank.
Price baseline
New steel Overseas Chronographs list above $30,000. Used examples trade from the low $20,000s and up. Listings below that range by a wide margin are not genuine watches. Replica listings run from about $200 to more than $1,000, set by the factory and the movement inside. Price does not confirm a watch on its own, but it removes obvious cases.
What photos cannot show
Caseback photos hide rotor material and movement finish. Dial photos hide lume texture and print quality. A buyer who cannot handle the watch should ask for a service record, a movement photo at high magnification, and a return policy. Vacheron Constantin service centers in the US do not service counterfeit watches, so a replica carries no service path and no parts supply.
US import rules
Counterfeit watches are prohibited goods under 19 U.S.C. § 1526. US Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy a shipment. The buyer loses the money paid and has no legal claim to the goods. Sellers who ship replicas into the US put buyers at that risk.
