Short answer
A replica Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle chronograph is a copy of a hand-wound Swiss chronograph that sells new for five figures in US dollars. Most replicas use a Seagull ST19 manual-wind column-wheel movement inside a 316L steel case with gold-color plating. The visual gap is small at arm's length. The gap is large at the movement, the case thickness, and the dial print.
The genuine watch
Vacheron Constantin builds the Traditionnelle chronograph around caliber 1142. The 1142 is hand-wound, uses a column wheel and a horizontal clutch, runs at 21,600 vph, and holds about 48 hours of power. It comes from the Lemania 2310 line, a design that other Swiss makers used for decades.
Reference numbers matter. Historiques and Traditionnelle chronograph references list at 38 mm to 42 mm. The platinum perpetual calendar chronograph, ref. 5000T, measures about 43 mm and carries a much higher price. Gold cases, opaline or guilloche dials, leaf hands, and the Maltese cross are standard.
What the replicas use
- Seagull ST19: manual wind, column wheel, 21,600 vph, about 40 hours of power. Derived from the Venus 175. This is the common choice at the mid tier.
- Decorated automatic with a chronograph module: the pushers work, but subdial layout and case thickness differ from the original.
- Quartz: the chronograph is a display function. Pushers may do nothing.
Checklist before you buy
- Case thickness. The genuine chronograph case is thin. Copies sit taller. Ask for a caliper measurement at the crystal.
- Subdial position. A different base movement moves the subdial centers. Compare the gap between each subdial and the center of the dial against photos of the reference.
- Dial print. Check stroke weight on the wordmark, the accent on Geneve, and the alignment of the cross.
- Pusher feel. A column wheel gives a light click at the start and a firm reset. A module feels soft.
- Plating wear. Gold-color plating thins at lug edges and the caseback lip. Ask how the plating was applied and how thick it is.
- Hands. Leaf hands should be polished, and blued on some references. Check the length against the minute track.
Price bands
Listed prices at replica sellers fall into three bands. Entry copies run about $150 to $250. Mid tier copies with an ST19 and a steel case run about $250 to $500. Top tier copies with better dial work, sapphire, and closer case finishing run about $500 to $900. Numbers move with the seller.
What no replica copies
The Geneva hallmark. Vacheron Constantin submits these movements for the Poincon de Geneve, which covers finishing and rate. Replica movements get machine brushing and no certification. The case metal differs too: the genuine watch is gold or platinum, and replicas are steel with plating. Service is another gap. Vacheron Constantin services caliber 1142 for decades. A replica movement has no parts network.
Legal and shipping notes
In the US, selling counterfeit goods is illegal under the Trademark Counterfeiting Act. US Customs can seize shipments. Buyers get no warranty and no maker service. State this to anyone who asks.
