Short answer
A replica Rolex Pearlmaster is a counterfeit copy of a gold, gem-set Rolex model that Rolex placed in its catalog in 1992. The copies sell for a fraction of the authentic price. They are not Rolex products, they hold no Rolex parts, and the sale or import of them in the United States is a crime.
What the Pearlmaster is
The Pearlmaster sits inside the Oyster Perpetual Datejust family. Rolex built it as a jewelry piece, not a tool watch. Catalog case sizes have been 29 mm, 34 mm, and 39 mm. Cases are solid 18k yellow gold, white gold, or Everose gold. The bezel is round and set with diamonds or colored gems rather than fluted or plain. The bracelet has five rounded links and closes with a concealed Crownclasp. Water resistance is 100 m on the models Rolex lists.
Rolex put calibre 2236, with a Syloxi silicon hairspring, into the Pearlmaster 34 in 2014. The 39 mm version used calibre 3235 when it arrived in 2016.
What replica versions change
- Metal. 18k gold has a density near 15.5 g/cm3. Stainless steel 316L sits near 8.0 g/cm3. Copies use steel or a brass alloy with gold plating or PVD. A 34 mm copy feels light for its size.
- Stones. Real bezels carry diamonds, sapphires, or rubies. Copies use cubic zirconia, glass, or lab-grown corundum. A gemologist separates them with a thermal tester or refractometer.
- Movement. Copies run Asian-made automatic movements. Sellers write "Swiss movement" on listings with no proof. Rolex does not sell movements, dials, cases, or bracelets to outside parties, so a genuine Rolex movement inside a copy cannot come from an official channel.
- Clasp. The Crownclasp takes real tooling. Copies often use a friction or fold-over clasp stamped to look similar.
Price tiers and seller claims
The copy trade uses labels such as "Swiss made," "1:1," and factory code names. None of these terms has a definition or an auditing body. Listed prices run from about $50 to over $1,000. Price does not confirm what is inside the case, and no buyer outside the supply chain can verify which workshop made a given watch.
Legal status in the US
18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual. A repeat offense carries up to 20 years and a $5,000,000 fine. The Lanham Act lets the trademark owner sue, with statutory damages up to $2,000,000 per counterfeit mark per type of goods when the use is willful. Customs and Border Protection can hold, seize, and destroy shipments at the border. A purchase does not give the buyer clear title to the watch.
How a Pearlmaster is checked
- Weigh it. Gold cases and bracelets weigh far more than steel copies of the same size.
- Open the caseback. A watchmaker reads the movement, the finishing, and the stamps.
- Test the stones. Diamond and cubic zirconia read apart on standard instruments.
- Ask a service center. Rolex service centers and authorized dealers do not service counterfeits. Rolex does not issue authentication letters to the public. Independent appraisers do that work.
What is not known
There is no public count of Pearlmaster copies made or sold. Factory code names in the copy trade change, and no independent body audits the claims sellers make about grade, metal, or origin.
