Short answer
A replica Portofino 39 is a copy of the IWC Portofino Automatic with a case listed at 39 mm across. It is not made by IWC. It carries no IWC warranty, no IWC service and no parts support from Schaffhausen. The number 39 refers to case diameter in millimeters. It is not a model year and not a reference number.
What the 39 measures
Case diameter runs from the 9 o'clock flank to the 3 o'clock flank, crown excluded. Genuine Portofino Automatics ship in 37 mm, 40 mm and 42 mm cases, so 39 mm sits between two factory sizes. Ask the seller for a caliper photo with the crown released. Expect the stated figure to miss the measured figure by 0.3 mm to 0.6 mm on most builds.
Movement options
Three movements appear in this replica class:
- Miyota 9015: 28,800 vph, 24 jewels, 42 hour power reserve, 3.9 mm thick.
- Clone of ETA 2892-A2: 28,800 vph, 21 jewels, 42 hour power reserve, 3.6 mm thick.
- Chinese 21,600 vph automatic: lower beat rate, shorter service life, found in the cheapest builds.
The genuine 40 mm Portofino Automatic uses calibre 35111, a Sellita SW300-1 base. Case thickness on the genuine watch is 9.5 mm. A replica with a Miyota 9015 lands near 9.8 mm to 10.5 mm because the caseback and spacer add height.
Case, crystal, dial
Ask for the steel grade. 316L is standard at this price, 904L is rare. Genuine watches use sapphire with anti-reflective coating on both faces. Some replicas use mineral glass. A steel pin will scratch mineral glass and leave sapphire unmarked. Check the dial print under 10x magnification: the brand text and PORTOFINO should sit level with clean serifs. The date should snap at midnight, not drift.
Water resistance and strap
Treat any water rating as a claim, not a spec. Gaskets on replica cases are the first part to fail. Do not swim with the watch. Straps are the second weak point. Check stitch density at the lug end and whether the leather is split grain or full grain. Alligator grain is embossed cowhide.
Price bands
Listings fall into three rough bands in US dollars: 200 to 350 for mineral glass and a low beat movement, 400 to 650 for a Miyota 9015 with sapphire, and 700 and up for a clone 2892 with better hand finishing. Above 700 the gap to a used entry Swiss watch narrows.
Checks before payment
- Timegrapher photo showing rate, amplitude and beat error.
- Movement photo with the caseback removed.
- Caliper photo of case diameter and thickness.
- Photo of the crown threads and the caseback gasket.
- Return window in writing.
Legal and ownership limits
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. CBP can seize the parcel, and the buyer has no refund path. Resale value is close to zero. A watchmaker may refuse service, and parts do not interchange with the genuine reference.
