Direct answer

The Panerai PAM 111 is a Luminor Marina with a 44 mm steel case, a hand-wound movement and small seconds at 9 o'clock. Panerai stopped production of this reference. "Replica PAM 111" means an unauthorized copy made by a third party. Panerai does not license it, does not service it and does not warrant it. Under US law, importing or selling such a copy is trademark counterfeiting.

The reference watch

The original specification, as published for the reference:

  • Case: 44 mm, stainless steel, Luminor crown guard with a locking lever.
  • Movement: caliber OP XI, manual wind, built on the Unitas 6497-2 pattern. About 56 hours of power reserve.
  • Dial: sandwich construction, luminous numerals and hour markers, small seconds subdial at 9 o'clock.
  • Water resistance: 300 m rating.
  • Crystal: sapphire. Case back: solid steel.

Panerai moved its base Luminor Marina models to in-house calibers. The PAM 111 left the catalog after that change. Total production numbers are not public.

What copies change

  • Movement: most copies use an Asian clone of the Unitas 6497. Decoration plates and Panerai engraving appear on some units. Bridge finish and screw quality differ from the OP XI.
  • Case: the crown guard lever fit, brushing grain and lug bevels are the places where hand finishing shows on the original.
  • Dial: lume color, thickness of the two sandwich plates and numeral font. Some low-price units use a printed dial with no sandwich layer.
  • Crystal: mineral glass on cheap units, sapphire on others. Scratch resistance differs.
  • Case back: engraving depth and font. Reference stamps on copies may not match the case.
  • Water resistance: no pressure test. A 300 m marking on a copy is a claim, not a test result. Do not swim with it.

Labels used in the replica trade

Sellers use terms such as "1:1", "AAA" and "super clone". No standards body defines these terms and no published test method backs them. Two sellers can apply the same label to watches from different workshops. Price alone does not identify the source factory.

Legal position in the US

18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. US Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy shipments of watches that carry a registered mark without authorization. Civil claims under the Lanham Act expose sellers to damages. Buying for personal use is a separate question from importing and selling, and state law varies. Panerai holds a USPTO trademark registration for its name.

Service and parts

Panerai service centers do not accept copies. Parts for the OP XI and the original case do not fit clone movements. A watchmaker who works on ETA and Unitas patterns can supply generic parts. Resale value after purchase is close to zero.
