Replica IWC ceramic watches copy the matte black case of the IWC Top Gun line. The two references copied most are the Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun (IW389101, 44.5 mm) and the Big Pilot's Watch 43 Top Gun (IW329801, 43 mm). Most replicas use zirconium oxide ceramic for the case, the same material family IWC uses. Build quality changes from factory to factory, so the case material is the first thing to verify.

What the ceramic is

IWC sinters zirconium oxide powder at high temperature to form a case. The finished material sits near 1200 HV on the Vickers scale. Stainless steel 316L sits near 200 HV. Density is about 6 g/cm3 against 7.9 g/cm3 for steel. Ceramic does not bend. It chips.

IWC also sells Ceratanium, a titanium and ceramic alloy, on some Top Gun and Ingenieur pieces. Replica Ceratanium is rare. Sellers who claim it often mean titanium with a black coating.

Three case types sold as ceramic

  1. Solid zirconium oxide ceramic. Full case, matte finish, color runs through the material.
  2. Ceramic-coated steel. Steel core, thin ceramic layer. A chip exposes grey metal.
  3. PVD or DLC coated steel. No ceramic at all. Light in the hand, rings when tapped, scratches show bright metal.

Checks that separate them

  • Weight: a 44 mm ceramic case feels lighter than steel in the hand, and heavier than coated aluminum.
  • Temperature: ceramic conducts heat poorly, so it feels close to room temperature on the wrist. Steel feels cold at first touch.
  • Tap test: flick the case flank with a fingernail. Coated steel rings. Ceramic gives a short, flat clack.
  • Magnet: a magnet sticks to steel, not to ceramic. Test the case flank, not the caseback.
  • Chip sites: check lug edges and bezel corners under a light. A white or silver speck on a black edge means coating.

Details to inspect

Caseback engraving on IWC Top Gun models is deep and clean. Replica engraving is often shallow and soft at the edges. Match the reference number to the dial layout: a chronograph caseback on a three-hand watch is a mismatch. Crown threads should engage without grit. The bezel insert on a Top Gun chronograph is ceramic with recessed numerals. Painted numerals wear at the edges.

Movements vary. Many replicas run an Asia 7750 chronograph or a clone of it. Subdial spacing at 12-6-9 fits the 7750 layout. A 3-6-9 layout on a 7750 base needs a module, and modules add case height and failure points.

Limits

Ceramic chips on impact. A chipped replica case cannot be polished or filled. Replacement cases are not sold as spare parts in most cases, so one drop can end the watch. Water resistance on replicas is not tested at the factory in most cases. Have a watchmaker pressure test the watch before swimming. Prices for ceramic replicas run about $300 to $800, set by factory and movement. No standard price list exists.

Questions for the seller

  • Is the case solid zirconium oxide or coated steel?
  • What is the measured case weight?
  • Which movement, and what is the subdial layout?
  • Is water resistance tested, and at what pressure?
  • What happens if the case chips?
