The reference 5402 is the original Royal Oak, the steel watch Audemars Piguet put on the market in 1972 and the one every later Royal Oak descends from. Replicas sold under that reference number copy a 39mm case that measured 8.1mm thick. Most of them miss the two things that actually define the watch: the ultra-thin calibre 2121 with its micro-rotor, and the Petite Tapisserie dial. Short answer, a replica 5402 is a cosmetic exercise. Why the 5402 Is So Hard to Copy
The whole point of the 5402 was thinness. Gérald Genta's design only works because the movement is roughly 3mm tall, which let the case sit at 8.1mm and let the bracelet taper into the lugs without a fat slab of metal behind it. That movement, the 2121, is an automatic built on the Jaeger-LeCoultre 920 architecture with a micro-rotor sunk into the base plate instead of a rotor spinning on top. Nothing in the replica supply chain comes close. A typical fake uses a Miyota or a low-grade clone with a full rotor and a decorative plate screwed over it. The extra height has to go somewhere, so the case grows and the profile goes wrong.

Where Replicas Give Themselves Away
I look at the caseback first, then the bracelet, then the dial. The caseback on a 5402 is a solid, deeply engraved octagon, and the engraving on fakes is shallow and machine-flat. The bracelet is the second tell. The original links are chamfered, the taper is gradual, and the clasp is thin and stamped with crisp text. Fakes almost always use a heavier, blockier link with rounded edges and a clasp that feels like it came off a mall watch.
Case height is the third tell, and the easiest one to spot across a table. Put a real 5402 next to a replica and the fake reads thick at the wrist even before you flip it over. Screws matter too. The eight screws on the bezel are functional on the original, with slots that line up to a torque spec, while the fake version usually has cosmetic heads that sit at random angles.
The Dial Is the Hardest Part
Petite Tapisserie is not printed. It is a raised grid stamped into the dial blank, then finished, and the squares vary slightly across the surface because of how the tooling worked. The texture catches light in a way that printed or badly stamped replicas do not. Date windows on the real thing sit in a raised frame with crisp edges. On fakes the frame is often a sticker or a soft printed outline, and the date font is wrong. The applied AP logo at 12 is another giveaway: it should be solid, sharp, and slightly domed, not a flat decal with a fuzzy edge.
A Note on Legality and Resale
Counterfeit watches infringe live trademarks, and US Customs seizes shipments of them routinely. Buying or reselling one carries civil exposure and, in trafficking cases, criminal penalties. There is also no resale market. A replica has no collector value, no service history, and no path to authentication, which is the opposite of what makes the 5402 interesting in the first place. Well-preserved A-series examples trade at auction for six figures, and that gap exists for mechanical reasons, not marketing ones.
