Fake Zeitwerk Big Date: Short Answer
A fake Zeitwerk big date is a replica of the A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk, a watch that shows the hour and minute as jumping numerals. The genuine line has no conventional big-date window. The Zeitwerk Date, reference 148.038, puts the date on a ring of 31 numerals around the dial edge. Sellers use the phrase "big date" for two builds: a date window cut into a copy of the standard dial, and a printed ring that copies the Zeitwerk Date look. Neither build matches the original mechanism. The window version adds a part Lange never made. The ring version does not move.
What the Genuine Watch Does
- Zeitwerk launched in 2009. Case diameter 41.9 mm.
- Hour and minute appear as numerals in two apertures, not as hands. Both jump at the top of each minute and hour.
- A constant-force escapement with a remontoir feeds the balance at a steady rate. That is what makes the jump possible.
- Calibre L043.1 in the 2009 model. Later versions use L043.5 and L043.6.
- Zeitwerk Date from 2019 adds a ring of 31 numerals at the outer track. The active date sits on a white field. The other 30 numerals are grey.
- Hand-wound. The power reserve display sits on the movement side.
How Replica Date Parts Work
Most replicas start from a stock automatic or quartz movement with a calendar module bolted on top. The module drives a printed date disc behind a window. That design produces three results.
- The date font is a standard date disc font. Lange numerals have a different shape, weight, and spacing.
- The numeral sits off-center in the window, or tilts, because the disc and the opening are not aligned.
- The date turns over on its own schedule. On the genuine Zeitwerk Date the ring jumps at midnight in the same instant as the numeral jump. A module disc creeps across over 30 to 90 minutes.
Checks That Separate the Two
- Window position. The standard Zeitwerk has just two apertures. Any third opening is an addition.
- Ring behavior. Watch the date change at midnight. A printed ring does not move.
- Case height. A calendar module adds 1 to 2 mm. Genuine Zeitwerk cases sit near 12.5 mm.
- Caseback. Look for the calibre number and the Lange engraving. Replicas show generic text or none.
- Jump sync. Hour, minute, and date should change in the same instant.
Legal Position in the US
Counterfeit watches are illegal to traffic in the United States. 18 U.S.C. 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods and carries prison terms and fines. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports of entry. A. Lange & Söhne does not service counterfeit watches. No replica carries a valid factory warranty. Resale value is near zero, so any price you see is the full cost. Exact replica specifications vary by seller and are often not published.
