What "fake Rotonde 4266" means
Rotonde 4266 is a seller code in the replica trade. It points to a copy of the Cartier Rotonde de Cartier, a round dress watch with Roman numerals and a fluted crown. Cartier writes its own references with a letter prefix and digits, so 4266 comes from a wholesaler catalog, not from Cartier. Two sellers can ship different watches under the same code. Ask for case diameter, movement model, and weight before you compare two listings.
Case, dial, and crown checks
- Case: 42 mm across, 10 to 11 mm thick, steel or gold plate. A gold-plated case shows wear at the lugs and crown first.
- Crystal: sapphire on the top tier, mineral glass on cheap builds. A mineral glass shows fine scratches after a few months.
- Crown: fluted, set with a blue cabochon. Cartier uses a sapphire cabochon. Replica crowns use glass or synthetic corundum, and the stone sits proud of the metal or rattles.
- Dial: engine-turned guilloche center, printed Roman numerals, blued sword hands. Cartier hides a secret signature inside the numeral VII on some dials. Most replicas leave it out or print a smear that shows under a 10x loupe.
- Function: small seconds, date, or dual time, depending on the version the seller ships. Confirm the layout in a photo before payment.
