Short answer
A fake Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167A is a counterfeit copy of reference 5167A-001, the steel Aquanaut that Patek Philippe introduced in 2007. Patek Philippe does not make it, sell it, or service it. Watches sold as Swiss replica or super clone Aquanauts are unlicensed copies. The movements inside come from China, not Switzerland. No step in the production involves Patek Philippe in Geneva.
What the genuine 5167A is
- Reference 5167A-001. Steel case, about 40 mm across. Sapphire crystal front and back.
- Dial: embossed checkerboard pattern, applied white gold numerals with luminous fill, date at 3 o'clock.
- Movement: caliber 324 S C, automatic, 21K gold rotor, Gyromax balance, Spiromax spring, Patek Philippe Seal. Power reserve 38 to 45 hours.
- Strap: black Tropical composite rubber, cut to length, steel deployant buckle.
- Water resistance: 120 m.
Tells that show up on copies
- Dial texture. Genuine squares are embossed into the dial plate. Copies print a flat grid or stamp squares that are too coarse.
- Numerals and lume. Genuine markers are solid white gold with an even luminous fill. Copies use printed markers, or lume that sits off center.
- Date. Copies show a date numeral that sits high or low in the window, or a font that does not match the genuine disc.
- Case and bezel. The Aquanaut bezel is a rounded octagon. Copies get the corner radius and the polished bevel width wrong. Brushing on copies runs in one direction and crosses the lug edges.
- Crown. Screw-down crown with the Calatrava cross. Copies use a plain crown or a shallow engraving.
- Caseback. Genuine engraving is crisp: brand, Geneve, reference 5167A-001, movement number and case number. Copies show shallow laser engraving, and the same serial numbers repeat across many pieces.
- Movement. Copy movements are decorated clones. Rotor engraving, jewel settings, and screw heads do not match the 324 S C.
- Strap and buckle. Genuine Tropical straps carry a molded Patek Philippe stamp on the underside. Copies use generic rubber.
Checks that settle the question
- Ask for the movement number and the case number. Patek Philippe records both.
- Take the watch to an authorized Patek Philippe service center. Movement numbers can be checked against the brand archives.
- Weigh the paperwork. A genuine full set includes a certificate of origin, a leather wallet, and a matching box. Copies ship with printed cards and numbers that do not match the watch.
- Compare the price to the market. Genuine second-hand 5167A watches sell in the tens of thousands of dollars. A price in the hundreds or low thousands points to a counterfeit.
Legal status in the United States
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first conviction carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. Repeat convictions carry up to 20 years. Civil suits under the Lanham Act let the trademark owner recover profits and damages. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at the border and destroys them. Watches rank among the most seized counterfeit categories in trade reports from the OECD and EUIPO. Buying a counterfeit is not a shortcut to owning a 5167A.
Parts and service
Patek Philippe does not supply parts for counterfeit watches. Owners of copies cannot get service from an authorized center, and independent watchmakers face the same parts shortage. A failed clone movement often leaves the watch as scrap. Resale value is close to zero, and no auction house or dealer will take one in trade.
