Short answer
The IW371485 sits in the IWC Portugieser Chronograph family, reference series IW3714. Fakes of this reference ship in three tiers: quartz builds under $150, Asian 7750 builds from $200 to $400, and high-tier builds above $500. None carry an IWC caliber 79350. Case size, subdial spacing, dial print, and crown engraving separate the tiers.
What the reference is
The Portugieser Chronograph uses a 40.9 mm stainless steel case. Thickness sits near 12.3 mm. Lug width is 20 mm. Water resistance is 3 bar. The dial holds two subdials: small seconds at 6 o'clock, chronograph minutes at 12. A date window sits at 3. Inside is the IWC caliber 79350, a modified Valjoux 7750 with 28,800 vph and a 44 hour power reserve. IWC fits sapphire on both sides on most variants. Dial color and strap type change by production run. I could not confirm which dial and strap combination the 485 suffix marks from public spec sheets, so treat any listing that names a color as unverified.
Fake tiers
- Quartz tier, $80 to $150. Mineral glass, stamped case back, non-working subdials, dead pushers, thickness above 14 mm.
- Mid tier, $200 to $400. Asian 7750 copy, sapphire front, printed dial, case thickness 13 mm to 14 mm, loose rotor noise.
- High tier, $500 and up. Clone 7750 with decorated bridges, double AR sapphire, thickness close to 12.3 mm. Bridge finishing and engraving still differ from IWC.
Checks
- Measure the case. 40.9 mm across, crown excluded. A 42 mm or 44 mm case is the wrong watch.
- Look at the subdials. Both sit on a vertical line through the center. Cheap builds offset them.
- Read the dial text. "International Watch Co." and "Schaffhausen" use thin serif type. Fakes use heavy type or wrong letter spacing.
- Turn the crown. The IWC crown carries a signature. Many fakes leave it blank or stamp a fish logo.
- Test the date. Fast set sits at position 2. A date that drags past midnight points to a cheap movement.
- Weigh the head. Brass and alloy cases run light against a steel head on the same strap.
- Check the pushers. A 7750 base starts the chronograph with a firm click. Quartz fakes feel soft.
Price and law
Genuine IW371485 examples trade in the low to mid thousands of USD on the secondary market, set by box, papers, and service history. Replicas sell from $80 to $700. In the United States, importing or selling a counterfeit watch is a federal offense under 18 U.S.C. section 2320. Customs can seize the shipment, and the buyer has no claim on the goods. IWC does not service replicas. No parts interchange with the genuine caliber 79350.
