Fake IWC IW323712: the short answer
The IW323712 is a variant of the IWC Ingenieur Automatic ref. IW3237. It has a 42.5 mm steel case, an integrated-look bracelet, five recessed screws on the bezel, and IWC calibre 80111. Fakes of the IW3237 exist and move through the same channels as other Swiss replica watches. Most use a generic Swiss or Asian automatic, not the IWC movement. A fake can look correct at arm's length. It does not hold up under a loupe on the caseback, the date wheel, or the rotor.
Reference points to check first
- Case diameter: 42.5 mm. Thickness about 14.5 mm.
- Water resistance: 120 m, marked on the caseback.
- Bezel: five screws, slots aligned to the same angle on genuine examples.
- Movement: calibre 80111, automatic, 28,800 vph, about 44 hours of power reserve.
- Crystal: sapphire, antireflective coating on both faces.
- Dial: applied steel indices, lume plots at the hour markers, date at 3.
Movement: the hardest part to copy
Calibre 80111 uses IWC's Pellaton winding system with a pawl and ratchet. The rotor carries the Probus Scafusia engraving. The bridges have Geneva stripes and a shape specific to IWC. Fakes use ETA 2824-2, Sellita SW200, or a Chinese clone. Clues: the winding feel, rotor noise, balance cock shape, and regulator position. A watchmaker with an 80111 parts sheet can settle it in ten minutes. Ask for a movement photo with the caseback removed before any purchase.
Case, bezel, and finish
The bezel screws are functional, not decorative. On genuine watches they sit flush and the slots run in the same direction. On fakes the slots point in random directions, sit proud of the bezel, or use a flat-head profile instead of the correct one. Case flank brushing on the Ingenieur is straight, with sharp transitions at the lug edges. Fakes round those edges. Check the crown: signed, with crisp engraving, not a stamped disc.
Dial and date
Print on genuine dials has a raised edge under a loupe. Fake print is flat and can flake. The date wheel font is thin and centered in the window. Fakes show a bolder font, off-center digits, or a wheel that sits too deep. Lume on genuine IW3237 dials is even. On fakes, lume plots vary in height and color under UV.
Caseback and bracelet
Engraving depth is the fastest tell. Genuine caseback text is cut, with sharp edges and even letter spacing. Laser-etched fake text looks shallow and grey. The reference and serial numbers must match the IWC archive. On the bracelet, check the clasp engraving and the micro-adjust holes. Fakes often have softer clasp edges and screws that take a 1.4 mm driver instead of the correct size.
Limits of any guide
No single photo proves a watch is genuine. Variants differ by dial code and bracelet code. IWC does not publish every discontinued variant on its site. Confirm the reference with IWC or an authorized service center before you buy. Prices for genuine IW3237 watches vary with condition, box, and papers. A price far below market is a data point, not proof.
