Short answer
"Fake Ingenieur 37" is a seller term. It does not match an IWC reference. IWC catalogs the Ingenieur Automatic 40 (ref. IW3289) at 40 mm and the Ingenieur Automatic 35 (ref. IW3249) at 35 mm. A 37 listing describes a replica case that measures 37 mm across, a size between those two models.
How the 37 mm figure is measured
Case diameter is read across the case at the 4 and 10 o'clock points, crown excluded. A 37 mm claim on a replica listing carries a tolerance of about 0.3 mm. Ask for a caliper photo with the jaws on the case middle, not on the bezel edge.
Numbers posted with 37 mm listings
- Diameter: 37.0 mm claimed, 36.6 to 37.4 mm measured
- Thickness: 11.5 to 12.5 mm. The genuine Ingenieur Automatic 40 is 10.8 mm.
- Lug width: 20 mm on most 37 mm replica cases
- Weight: varies with the number of links fitted. Ask for a scale photo with the bracelet sized.
Movement inside a fake Ingenieur 37
Most 37 mm replica cases take a Miyota 9015 or a clone of the IWC caliber 32111. The Miyota 9015 runs at 28,800 vph with about 42 hours of reserve. The genuine caliber 32111 is rated at 120 hours. A seller who quotes 120 hours for a 37 mm replica is repeating the genuine spec, not the spec of the watch in the photo. Ask for a timegrapher print with rate, amplitude and beat error.
Case and dial points to check
- Bezel screws: the Ingenieur Automatic 40 has five screws on the bezel. Count them in the photo.
- Dial: raised grid of squares. On replicas the grooves are shallow and the print sits low.
- Date window at 3 o'clock with a frame. Check the frame edge thickness.
- Caseback: engraved reference number and serial. Compare font weight against IWC catalog photos.
- Bracelet: H-links with taper from case to clasp. Check the clasp for a micro-adjust hole.
Price bands
The genuine Ingenieur Automatic 40 in steel listed at about USD 11,700 at the 2023 launch. Replica 37 mm listings in 2024 and 2025 fall into three bands: USD 120 to 250 for quartz or low-grade automatic, USD 350 to 600 for a Miyota 9015 build with sapphire crystal, and USD 700 and up for so-called super clone claims. Confirm what the price covers: box, papers, spare links, shipping.
What no one can confirm
IWC's published catalog and the standard reference books do not list a 37 mm Ingenieur. A seller who cites a reference number for one is citing a number that IWC does not publish. Ask for an archive extract from IWC in Schaffhausen. If the seller cannot name the source, treat the reference as made up.
