What the genuine watch does
Cartier opened its mystery line with clocks in 1912, built with watchmaker Maurice Couet. The Rotonde de Cartier Astromystérieux (2016) uses calibre 9504 MC, hand wound, 408 parts. The barrel, gear train, escapement and balance sit on two sapphire discs. Those discs turn from the case edge. No bridge crosses the center, so the movement looks unsupported. The Rotonde de Cartier Mysterious Hour carries calibre 9981 MC in a pink gold case. Cartier lists the Astromystérieux in platinum, so a gold mystery Cartier is a different reference from the 2016 piece.

Checks on a listed watch
- Tilt the dial toward a light. A mystery display shows no center arbor. A printed replica shows one.
- Look at the edge of the dial. Genuine mystery work uses sapphire wheels driven at the rim. A replica uses a metal ring.
- Check the case back for a hallmark: 750, an eagle head, or a maker's mark.
- Weigh the watch in hand. Gold and steel do not match at the same volume.
US legal position
