Short answer
A fake Breguet tourbillon perpetual calendar is a replica of a Breguet Classique watch that pairs a tourbillon with a calendar display. Prices for these replicas run from about $400 to $1,500. Most examples do not carry a true perpetual calendar. Genuine Breguet tourbillon perpetual calendar watches sell for $150,000 to $400,000 or more at retail and at auction.
What the genuine watch does
Abraham-Louis Breguet patented the tourbillon in 1801. The device puts the balance wheel and escapement inside a rotating cage to average out rate errors caused by gravity in pocket watches. A perpetual calendar tracks date, day, month and leap year. It handles 28, 29, 30 and 31 day months with no input from the wearer. The mechanism needs one correction in 2100, because 2100 is not a leap year under the Gregorian rule.
Breguet builds these watches in the Classique line. Cases are platinum or gold. Dials use hand-turned guilloche work and a secret signature. Movements carry hand-finished bridges, blued screws and a tourbillon cage that beats at 2.5 or 4 Hz.
What the replicas contain
The name on the dial does not match the mechanism inside. Three setups appear on the market:
- Real low-cost tourbillon. Sea-Gull and Hangzhou Watch Company in China build tourbillon movements that sell for a few hundred dollars. Some replicas use them.
- Faux tourbillon. An open cutout at 6 o'clock shows a balance wheel that spins in place without orbiting. The wheel moves. The cage does not.
- Annual or simple calendar. Day, date and month wheels advance by hand at the end of short months. No leap year wheel. No century correction.
A perpetual calendar module adds more than 100 parts to a movement. That part count is the reason genuine models cost six figures and replicas do not.
How to check one
- Advance the hands past February 28 in a non-leap year. A perpetual calendar jumps to March 1. An annual calendar stays on February 29 or 30 and needs a manual fix.
- Look for the leap year indicator. Genuine perpetual calendars show it on the dial or the case back.
- Watch the balance. A real tourbillon cage orbits with the escapement inside it.
- Weigh the case. A platinum replica weighs less than platinum should.
- Inspect engraving on the case back and rotor. Laser etching has flat edges. Hand engraving has depth.
Legal status in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual. Trademark owners can also sue under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. 1114 and 1125. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports of entry and destroys them.
Open questions
Replica factories change movement suppliers without notice. A model sold in 2022 may ship with a different calibre in 2025. Breguet reference numbers, case sizes and dial layouts vary by generation, so match the exact reference before you compare parts.
