Short answer

A fake Breguet tourbillon is a replica of a Breguet watch that shows a rotating carriage on the dial. Prices run from about $150 to $800. A new Breguet tourbillon lists above $140,000. Two build types exist. The first has a decorative cage that turns on a seconds-hand pivot and holds no balance wheel. The second uses a working Chinese tourbillon movement, such as the Seagull ST8000 or a Hangzhou calibre. The decorative type is the common one.

What a tourbillon does

Abraham-Louis Breguet patented the tourbillon on 26 June 1801. The device puts the balance wheel, hairspring, and escapement in a cage that rotates once per minute. Breguet designed it for pocket watches, which sat vertical in a waistcoat pocket for most of the day. Rotation averages out the pull of gravity on the balance. In a wristwatch the arm moves through many positions, so the gain is smaller and disputed. A carriage in high-end work holds 60 to 80 parts and weighs under 1 gram.

Prices, real and fake

Breguet sells the Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat 5367 at 41 mm with the 581 calibre. List price sits above $140,000. Breguet lists an 80-hour power reserve for the 581. The Tradition Tourbillon 7047 also measures 41 mm. Pre-owned Breguet tourbillons at auction clear tens of thousands of dollars. A Swiss tourbillon movement alone costs more than the full price of a $300 replica. A listing that claims "Swiss tourbillon" at that price is not accurate.

Checks that work

  1. Count the cage rotations. One full turn takes 60 seconds. Many decorative fakes turn once per second or once per 30 seconds.
  2. Look at the balance. On a real tourbillon the balance wheel and hairspring sit inside the rotating cage. On a fake the cage is a ring around a fixed balance, or an open disc with no balance at all.
  3. Measure the case. The Breguet 5367 is 7.45 mm thick. Most fakes run 12 mm to 15 mm because the base is a stock automatic with a dial plate added.
  4. Read the case back. Breguet engraves a case number and a movement number. The factory keeps a record for both. Fakes repeat the same numbers across a production run.
  5. Check the dial work. Breguet cuts guilloche patterns on a rose engine. Replicas stamp or print the pattern. Edges look soft under a 10x loupe.
  6. Check the hands. Breguet hands are blued steel with a hollow eccentric tip. Replicas use painted or plated steel.

Red flags in listings

  • A tourbillon aperture under $1,000 with "Swiss made" on the dial.
  • Photos that hide the balance wheel.
  • No photo of the movement through the case back.
  • Stock photos reused across several sellers.
  • A "1:1 clone" claim with no serial data.

Legal position in the US

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and sell in the United States. 18 U.S.C. 2320 sets criminal penalties for trademark counterfeiting. 19 U.S.C. 1526 allows seizure and forfeiture. Customs and Border Protection lists watches and jewelry among its top seizure categories by value. Swiss law adds a separate rule. A watch marked "Swiss made" must carry 60% of its manufacturing costs in Switzerland. A Chinese tourbillon in a Chinese case cannot carry that mark.

Common questions

Does a $400 tourbillon keep time? A Seagull ST8000 in a steel case holds a rate that depends on regulation and position. Makers quote a range near -10 to +30 seconds a day. That is a working tourbillon. It is not a Breguet.

Can a replica use a real Breguet movement? Breguet builds calibres 581, 591, and 187H in-house. No published channel sells those calibres to outside case makers. A bridge stamped with one of those numbers came from a different factory.
