Short answer
On the 26331, the case and the bracelet carry the illusion. The dial gets all the attention, but thickness, bezel screws and end link fit are what decide whether the watch looks right on a wrist. If a build gets those three right and the dial is merely decent, it wears better than a build with a perfect dial on a fat, slab-sided case.
What the reference actually is
The 26331ST is the 41mm Royal Oak Chronograph that replaced the 26320 in 2017. Steel, Grande Tapisserie dial, octagonal bezel with eight hexagonal screws, and an integrated bracelet. Inside is the calibre 2385, a column wheel chronograph built on the Frederic Piguet 1185, running at 21,600 vph with about 40 hours of reserve. The watch measures roughly 11mm thick, and that number matters more than anything else in the replica world.
The three tiers you will run into
- Budget: meca-quartz or a plain quartz chrono. Light, correct looking at arm's length, wrong the moment you feel the pushers or watch the sweep.
- Mid: A7750 based. It functions like a real chronograph, but the movement is thick, so the case usually runs 12.5 to 13.5mm. The caseback sits proud of the wrist and the end links meet the case at a steeper angle than they should.
- Top tier: the AP focused factories, APSF being the name most people repeat, plus a couple of others. These builds chase the 11mm profile with a slimmed or reworked chrono movement and get the dial, hands and bezel geometry close.
Checks worth doing before you commit
- Calipers on the thickness. If a seller will not quote a number, that is an answer.
- Bezel screws. Count eight. Look at slot depth and alignment. On cheap builds the heads are stamped decoration, so the slots sit shallow and point in random directions.
- Case flanks. The Royal Oak has a distinct chamfer running down the side from lug to lug. It should be polished and crisp, not soft and rounded.
- Tapisserie. The grid should be even with squares cut cleanly. Poor casts look mushy at the corners and the pattern fades near the date window.
- Dial print and logo. Check the weight of the lettering and whether the logo is applied or printed.
- Hands and lume. Faceted hands, clean edges, even lume fill. A sloppy lume job shows under a phone flash.
- Date aperture. Font, size and placement are all tells. Check the wheel and how the window is cut.
- Bracelet. Link side bevels should be polished against brushed tops. Check the taper and how tightly the end links meet the case. Rattle is a bad sign, and so is a bracelet that looks like it was finished with a belt sander.
- Clasp. Engraving depth and the AP logo. Shallow laser etching is common on mid tier builds.
- Crystal and AR. A blue tint over the dial or a milky edge around the sapphire means cheap coating.
How the chronograph should feel
Press the pushers. A column wheel movement has a light, clean start and stop. Reset should snap back with authority and the chrono seconds hand should return to twelve without a wobble. On quartz builds the pushers feel like a click, which is fine on a cheap watch and wrong on this one. On A7750 builds the start can feel stiff and the reset can lurch. If the subdial hands jump when you reset, walk away.
Fit and daily wear
The 26331 is a 41mm watch with a bracelet that does not taper much, so it wears bigger than the number suggests. Under about 6.75 inches of wrist, the case can hang past the edges. Think about that before you fall in love with photos.
